The world’s first plug-in hybrid (PHEV) super SUV has arrived with room for four people, 60 km of electric range, and more than 700 horsepower, but perhaps what makes it so special is the fact it’s a Lamborghini.
Having made its global debut at the Beijing Auto Show, the Urus SE marks the third electrified vehicle in Lamborghini’s fleet after the new Revuelto and the limited-run Sian from 2020.
The new SUV continues to be powered by the same 4.0L twin-turbocharged V8 in the regular Urus that’s been slightly reconfigured to output 611 hp. Combined with the 25-kWh lithium-ion battery, which is situated below the floor and powers the electric motor located in the transmission, total system output is rated at 789 hp and 700 lb-ft of torque. Couple this output with the all-wheel-drive system, and the Urus SE can rocket to 100 km/h from a standstill in a claimed 3.4 seconds.
This positions it between the Urus S and the Performante in terms of outright acceleration, as the former achieves the same numbers in 3.5 seconds, while the latter does it in 3.3. Top speed is up to 130 km/h in EV mode and 312 km/h in its sportiest setting. The Urus SE carries forward the six drive modes (strada, sport, corsa, neve, sabbia, and terra) as the original but now gains four additional modes: EV drive, hybrid, recharge, and performance.
Styling is another key area where the Urus SE differs from the aforementioned variants, as the SUV now rocks a Revuelto-inspired hood with a floating design. Additional new details at the front include matrix LED headlight clusters with a new light signature, a redesigned bumper, and front grille. The design gets quite interesting in the rear, as the SUV now features a new hatch profile with details like a hexagonal mesh pattern strip connecting the Y-shaped LED taillights, a big nod to the Gallardo and past Lamborghinis. The Urus SE is available with 21-, 22-, or 23-inch wheels, all of which are wrapped in Pirelli P Zero tires.
These design changes are not just for show, as Lamborghini claims that thanks to the new underbody vents, rear diffuser, and redesigned air duvets, the Urus SE is aerodynamically superior to the original Urus by 15 per cent and produces 35 per cent more downforce than the Urus S. The company also said that courtesy of the SUV’s “two hearts” combining gas and electric power, it not only boasts best-in-segment torque and power, but also an 80 per cent reduction in emissions.
Changes continue inside with a brand new 12.3-inch central touchscreen with the latest software and user interface. Other new interior details are the new dashboard panels and seats along with new AC vents. Official pricing and fuel economy figures have yet to be announced, but Lamborghini has said that customers will begin taking deliveries of the Urus SE starting at the end of 2024.
