Transport Canada has just issued a pair of extensive recalls on large GM vehicles. One that covers just over 300,000 full-size pickups and SUVs and another that affects nearly 160,000 full-size trucks.
The first one is for an issue with power brake assist. The recall notice says that "on certain vehicles, there could be a reduction in power brake assist due to a decrease in output from the vacuum pump." With no brake assist, it's much harder to press the pedal hard enough to stop the vehicle, especially if you need to stop quickly. Transport Canada says that the issue could increase the risk of a crash.
That one affects 300,655 vehicles from model year 2014-2017. Models covered include the 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade, Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, 2014-2017 Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra.
The notice says that GM is still working on a fix and will notify owners by mail.
The second recall is for 159,240 pickups and is an issue with the power sliding rear window. The notice says that on trucks equipped with the power slider, the rear defroster circuit could overheat. That could cause melting, smoke, or even a fire.
It affects 2014-2018 Silverado and GMC Sierra, and 2015-2019 Silverado HD and Sierra HD. Owners will be instructed to take their truck to a dealer to remove the rear window defroster fuse until a final fix is issued.
GM directs owners to its Recall Centre to see if their vehicle is affected.
