Hyundai's Kona is a subcompact crossover that caught on right away at its 2018 introduction. It stands out for unique styling that's more cute than weird, an optional turbo powertrain, nice fit-and-finish, and Hyundai's usual high-value packaging. It's simply a well-done, nice-driving little vehicle that explains who so many consumers are abandoning the small-car market for subcompact utility vehicles.

On certain vehicles, the rear outboard seat belt retractors may not have been manufactured correctly. As a result, the seat belts may not extend and/or retract correctly.
Safety Risk:
A seat belt that doesn't work properly could increase the risk of injury in a crash.
Corrective Actions:
Hyundai will notify owners by mail and advise you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect the left and right-rear seat belt retractors, and replace them if necessary. Hyundai recommends that if you hear a noise when extending the seat belt or are unable to extend it, you should not transport a passenger in that seat, and you should contact a dealer immediately to have the vehicle inspected.

On certain vehicles, the circuit board for the transmission electric oil pump may be damaged. As a result, the circuit board could short circuit and overheat, and various electrical systems may not work properly.

Issue:
On certain vehicles, a fault in the transmission oil pump can cause the vehicle to enter "fail-safe mode". When this happens, a programming error can cause a sudden loss of power to the wheels after 20-30 seconds.
Note: This recall only affects certain vehicles equipped with an 8-speed dual-clutch transmission (DCT).

A sudden loss of power to the wheels could increase the risk of a crash.
Corrective Actions:
Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealership to inspect and, if necessary, replace the transmission. The dealer will also update the transmission control unit software.

Issue:
On certain vehicles, the engine's piston oil rings may be defective. This can cause engine wear that can lead to increased oil consumption. Eventually, this can create abnormal engine noise and the oil pressure warning light may turn on. If you continue to drive the vehicle with these symptoms, the engine could fail.
Note: This only affects vehicles equipped with a 2.0 L Nu MPI engine.
Safety Risk:
A sudden loss of engine power could increase the risk of a crash. An engine failure could also create the risk of a fire.
Corrective Actions:
Hyundai will notify owners by mail and instruct you to take your vehicle to a dealer to inspect the engine. The engine will be replaced, if necessary. The dealer will also install a Piston-ring Noise Sensing System (PNSS) software update, to alert the driver of potential damage before an engine failure occurs.
