Hyundai has just unveiled their full Ioniq hybrid and EV lineup. This will be the first dedicated platform that provides a hybrid, a plug-in model, and a full EV in one model.
Under the hood of the hybrid models will be a new 1.6L direct injected Atkinson-cycle four-cylinder developing 104 hp and 109 lb-ft of torque. The electric motor attached to the hybrid model delivers an additional 43 hp (for a combined 139) and the plug-in gets a more powerful 60-hp motor. The base hybrid has a 1.85-kWh lithium-ion polymer battery and the plug-in has an 8.9-kWh battery giving it a 40 km range. Attached to each of the hybrid options is a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.
The Ioniq Electric has a 28-kWh battery and a 120-hp electric motor allowing a range of up to 176 km and identifiable by its aerodynamically efficient closed front end as opposed to the grilles in the hybrids. Dual-clutch options allow a sport and Eco mode, and Hyundai is positioning the car as a more sporting alternative to other hybrids.
Inside there is a seven-inch infotainment screen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capabilities, and there is also wireless smartphone charging capability. Hyundai claims more interior room than the Prius for class-leading space. There is a unique use of sustainable interior materials in the Ioniq: the door panels are a mix of resin, wood fibre, and volcanic stone that results in a light weight and soft interior panel. Hyundai is also using exterior paints that contain soybean oil and the headliner contains materials extracted from sugar cane.
For electronic safety features, Ioniq has Automatic Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Detection, Lane Departure Warning, Blind Spot Detection, Rear Cross-Traffic Alert and Smart Cruise Control.
