A Facebook auto enthusiast fan page has published a photo showing the nearly undisguised front end of the forthcoming successor to the 2017 Volkswagen Touareg SUV.
Based on the same MLB platform that underpins the VW-first three-row SUV called Atlas, the new Touareg sports angular front-end styling that resembles that larger model, as well as most of VW's recently revealed concept and production models, like the T-Prime revealed at the 2016 Beijing auto show.
While the Atlas will be the brand's largest SUV, the new Touareg is expected to be poshest, positioned as VW's flagship crossover model and engineered and equipped to compete with the likes of the 2017 BMW X5 and 2017 Volvo XC90, according to Brit car mag Autocar. We feel like the current Touareg already manages that feat quite nicely, only at a bargain price, considering it's not shy about riding on a platform shared with the Porsche Cayenne.
The T-Prime had a PHEV powertrain VW said generated 375 hp and 516 lb-ft of torque, along with about 50 km of all-electric range, facts that further reinforce VW's potentional upscale stretch: both the X5 and XC90 offer plug-in hybrid options. We think it entirely plausible the Touareg will use a variant of the plug-in system Porsche is about to roll out in its Cayenne Turbo S E-Hybrid, along with a more conventional gas V6 powertrain much like what it gets now. Don't expect the diesel that made the Touareg so impressive before it was discovered VW lied about that engine's exhaust emissions.
Watch for the next-gen Touareg to be officially revealed later this year or in early 2018.
