Lexus is opening up about the future of its LC flagship two-door with the LC Convertible concept it will reveal at this year's NAIAS in Detroit.
The LC is the luxury coupe Lexus added to the top of its two-door range two years ago. Lexus says its latest concept simply "Reimagines" the LC "as a future convertible," but we think this car is a strong contender for production. The LC coupe that went on sale in 2018 looked very much like the LF-LC concept Lexus showed a few years earlier.
Lexus offers few technical details about the LC Convertible concept, including whether the roof hidden under the decklid is fabric or a multi-piece folding top.
The LC Convertible concept's body is 10mm longer than the current LC coupe, but shares the same width and wheelbase. Lexus says the LC Convertible concept wears 22-inch wheels, while the LC coupe comes with 20s and can be optioned with 21-inchers. Those figures are enough to convince us that, despite the "concept" moniker, a production version is a certainty.
Lexus says the LC Convertible concept's cabin "caters to every need," and was conceived "to make the most common trip feel like an occasion." However, the concept does away with the coupe's two-place rear seat. Packaging limitations might also do away with the LC coupe's optional hybrid powertrain. That means all LC convertibles would use the 5.0L V8 (471 hp/398 lb-ft of torque) and 10-speed transmission from the LC 500 coupe.
A production LC convertible would become one of Lexus's most expensive models: The LC coupe's price starts at just over $100,000 and a convertible roof would certainly add to that.
Detroit's 2019 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS) opens to the public on Monday, January 14th.
