Jeep is bringing back an iconic nameplate to take on the biggest, most luxurious SUVs on the market: meet the Grand Wagoneer Concept.
Jeep says that we can expect to see a production version of the Grand Wagoneer in showrooms next year – which means this concept is no mere design exercise. We can’t say for sure which elements of this concept will make production, but Jeep did share a few concrete details, revealing that the Grand Wagoneer will pack three different 4x4 systems, air suspension, and independent front and rear suspension.
We also know that the Grand Wagoneer is a three-row luxury SUV with a price tag that can climb above $100K, lining it up to compete with vehicles like the Cadillac Escalade, Lincoln Navigator, and Range Rover. On the lower end of the price scale, it will compete with the Chevy Suburban and Ford Expedition.
The concept, finished in Arctic Ice white, captures the classic Jeep look in the front end; Obsidian Black accents and LEDs outline the iconic seven-slot grille with a modern flourish. Between the LED projector headlamps, raised backlit lettering spells out Wagoneer. Massive 24-inch wheels give the SUV big presence along with the wraparound LED tail lamps.
Climbing into the Grand Wagoneer you are greeted with a silhouette of the original Wagoneer etched into the ends of the massive horizontal dash. Above is a full-length, single-pane glass roof, which in the case of the concept has been finished with a map of Detroit to pay homage to its home city (though it will be built in nearby Warren, Michigan).
Details in the interior include an onyx glass mid-bolster running the length of the instrument panel, and a structural aluminum wing that stretches across the front cabin and holds the wood inlays and massive screens. A 12.3-inch driver information screen is housed behind the steering wheel, a 12.1-inch screen sits in the centre of the dash to serve as the main display while a 10.25-inch passenger screen puts many of the vehicles controls at your co-pilot’s fingertips.
Rear-seat passengers also have a screen to share, or they can enjoy their own 10.25-inch personal screens. Uconnect 5 is FCA’s latest infotainment system and it will be put to work in the Grand Wagoneer. Audio comes from McIntosh, packing a custom-designed 23-speaker system into the big SUV.
As for power, Jeep has only said at this point that the Grand Wagoneer will feature a plug-in hybrid powertrain; details on the exact engine and specification have not been released.
Besides the Grand Wagoneer, Jeep also has plans to launch a standard Wagoneer model to better compete with some of the lower-priced full-size SUVs on the market. From there, more models could spin off as Jeep says it has a “portfolio of vehicles” planned for the Wagoneer nameplate.
