2023 Toyota Prius Debuts with New Look and Standard AWD

The world's most well-known hybrid has entered its fifth generation after 22 years of efficiency. The 2023 Toyota Prius has debuted at the LA Auto Show with a radically different look and standard all-wheel drive for the Canadian market. The 2023 Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid (PHEV) also debuted with a new battery that increases EV driving range 50 per cent over the previous model's 40 km.

With larger 19-inch wheels and a lower, wider stance that smooths out some of the previous model's awkward proportions and a new design language that makes the new Prius look sleeker and less dorky than before, this hybrid has a whole new personality.

The hybrid powertrain pairs a larger 2.0L four-cylinder motor with a new lithium-ion battery located under the rear seat that has higher output and is lighter than the nickel-metal hydride unit it replaces. With an electric motor powering the rear wheels to enable part-time all-wheel drive, the new Prius outputs 196 hp. The new Prius Prime outputs 220 hp. Toyota has also promised that this new Prius is more engaging to drive.

A heated steering wheel, heated front seats, wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard along with a digital rear-view mirror and Toyata's full suite of safety and driver assistance technology. This new Prius is also equipped to accept over-the-air updates.

Toyota hasn't yet unveiled fuel economy for the new Prius, but expect more info and pricing before the end of the year.
