In the mid-2000s, Mazda re-established itself as a manufacturer of fun-to-drive small cars with the Mazda3. Unfortunately, that car also reinforced the proficiency with which the brand's vehicles rust.
And the latest Mazda recall suggests the company hasn't outrun the rust with its latest batch of designs: Mazda is asking the owners of more than 180,000 vehicles to come back to the dealer to have rust-prone tailgate supports replaced.
These are the hydraulic struts that help lift the tailgate up. Mazda says insufficient anti-corrosion treatment can allow the struts to rust and eventually break off, creating a safety concern in that the tailgate may fall on anyone standing under the open door.
This recall applies to the CX-3 (2016) and CX-5 (2013–2016) crossovers, Mazda5 wagons sold between 2010 and 2013 and Mazda3 Sport hatchbacks sold in 2012 through 2016.
