Mini Reveals All-New Countryman, To Offer Plug-In Version

Mini has just revealed their newest Countryman, and the Mini just keeps getting bigger. Mini's first plug-in hybrid model will also be joining the lineup as the CUV moves to a bigger platform and new engines.

The 2017 Countryman is Mini's subcompact crossover, and the all-new four-door is going to be much less subcompact. The new Mini will be 200 mm longer and 30 mm wider than before. That leads to a big boost in rear seat room as well, with the back seat gaining 97 mm more knee room for passengers. Mini claims overall interior space will increase by 30 percent over the previous generation.

At launch, there will be Cooper and Cooper S models, both with ALL4 all-wheel drive available. The base Cooper model comes with a 1.5L three-cylinder turbocharged engine making 134 hp and 162 lb-ft of torque. Six-speed manual and six-speed automatic transmissions will be available in two-wheel drive, while ALL4 models get eight-speeds in their automatic transmissions. Cooper S comes with a 2.0L turbo four making 189 hp and 207 lb-ft of torque. There will be a six-speed manual standard with an eight-speed automatic optional on two and all-wheel drive cars.

Later in 2017 Mini's first plug-in hybrid, the Cooper S E ALL4 - PHEV is set to arrive in Canada. It will have the 1.5L three-cylinder from the Cooper, and add 87 hp and 122 lb-ft from an electric motor, for a total of 221 hp and 284 lb-ft. That will be sent through a six-speed automatic transmission. The 7.6 kWh lithium-ion battery will give the Mini an estimated electric range of 38 km, and a top speed of 123 km/h on the electric motor.

Inside will be an available new 8.8-inch touchscreen navigation system with a new interface and operating system. All Countryman models will get a 6.5-inch display, rear parking sensors, automatic lights and wipers, and 17-inch alloys on Cooper with 18-inch on Cooper S.

The full World Premiere of the Countryman will be at the Los Angeles International Auto Show in November. Sales of the Cooper and Cooper S are expected to begin in March of 2017.
