Not happy to sit on the laurels of the 707 hp Hellcat Chargers and Challengers, Dodge is teasing an even more high-performance car. They are calling the new Challenger SRT Demon their "ultimate performance halo." The brand is releasing a series of videos, one per week, leading up to the full unveil at the New York auto show in March.
While the first video, titled Cage, is short on details, it's big on drama. There are armed guards, a massive self-propelled tracked cage, and the setup for a street race. Then the animated Hellcat that Dodge used to promote those cars drinks something flammable and green that transforms it into the Demon. If you look really closely, you can even catch a glimpse of the nose of a Challenger, reflected in some sunglasses.
So what is the Demon? Originally, it was a fastback version of the Dart for 1971, but as for the new one? Dodge isn't giving a lot of information, but what they are saying is interesting. For a start, Dodge is claiming that they are "raising the bar again with the Dodge Challenger SRT Demon." That speaks strongly to a higher performance car than current Hellcat models. Head of Passenger Car Brands for SRT Tim Kuniskis says about the Demon that "most cars attempt to be everything to everybody. Then there are the rare few that revel in a single objective, rendering them totally irresistible to a subculture." That sounds like a plan for a more focused performance model, which is cemented by his saying that the "Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is conceived, designed and engineered for a subculture of enthusiasts who know that a tenth is a car and a half second is your reputation." While that line sounds straight out of an early Fast and Furious movie, it also has us curious to find out if this means more power, more cornering, or both.
