The Volkswagen T-Roc concept is expected to hit European dealerships this fall, and now reports say that Volkswagen is bringing the T-Roc compact crossover to the US for 2019. What does that mean for Canadians? A spokesperson from the company says that the automaker is currently considering bringing the two-door CUV to Canada as well.
The report that it will be coming to the US comes from Automotive News. The plan to add the CUV to the lineup hinged on dealers committing to order enough of them to make it a profitable effort. As far as coming to Canada, the act of certifying the T-Roc for the US market certainly helps the case for the crossover, but it's no guarantee.
VW Canada spokesperson Thomas Tetzlaff told Automotive News Canada that the T-Roc is "one of many (concepts) we are evaluating for the product portfolio in Canada." He also added that "Volkswagen is keen on rapidly expanding our lineup of such cars and trucks."
The T-Roc is a concept that debuted at the 2014 Geneva Motor Show. It's a radical three-door, open topped crossover based on the MQB platform that underpins the 2017 Volkswagen Golf. It's much like the new Euro-only Audi Q2, but with a bolder design. The concept was a three-door crossover, but a five-door is rumoured for production. The production T-Roc will be smaller than the Tiguan, sitting beside the Golf in the VW line.
The new SUV joins the all-new 2018 Atlas and the recently announced longer wheelbase Tiguan as part of Volkswagen's push into the SUV side of the market.
