Ram Recalls Pickups for Broken Front Drive Shafts

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles has recalled a small number of its Ram 1500 pickup trucks to replace front drive axles that could break.

The problem has been traced back a fault in the material hardening process employed to improve the strength of the metal used to manufacture the shafts. A broken shaft will render a Ram 1500's four-wheel drive system inoperative; an axle that breaks at speed could cause an accident, either through the loss of motive power, or due to other drivers swerving to avoid broken pieces scattered on the roadway.

Dealers will install a pair of new front drive axles in the affected Ram pickups. FCA's Jeep brand recalled its Cherokee for the same problem.
