Chrysler Recalls Vans, Crossovers for Transmission Flaw

Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) has recalled 9,200 minivans and crossovers to fix a transmission flaw that could render the vehicles undriveable.

The transmission in question is the six-speed used in the Dodge Grand Caravan and Chrysler Town & Country minivans, Dodge Journey crossovers and Ram Promaster cargo vans. Transport Canada's recall notice says a pump in the transmission that delivers the hydraulic pressure needed to make the gearbox function could seize or break.

Our reading of the recall suggests that would cause a "false neutral" situation in which the transmission would stop transmitting power to the front wheels, and that (probably sudden) loss of forward progress could cause a collision.

Dealers are being instructed to replace the transmission pump assembly in the 2015 and 2016 model year versions of the vehicles affected.
