Nissan Recalls Sentra, Leaf to Fix Airbag Connector

Nissan is asking owners of some 2016 Sentra compact and Leaf electric cars to bring their vehicles back to the dealer to have an airbag wiring harness inspected.

Transport Canada says that in 165 vehicles, the front passenger airbag wiring connector could become partially disconnected which, in the event of a crash, could prevent the airbag's second stage from deploying and increase the risk of injury.

An airbag's first stage is intended to protect occupants in lower-speed collisions in which the airbag can be deployed with less force. The more-powerful second stage is used in higher-speed collisions, where a quicker and stronger deployment offers better protection.

Nissan is instructing its dealers to inspect the wiring harnesses in the affected cars, and replace it where necessary.
