Ford has revealed their all-new F-series Super Duty pickup today, with more power, more towing, more cargo, and more truckness, but less weight. The new Super Duty pickups have an aluminium body, like the F150. That means they are now up to 160 kg lighter than before. The frame is fully boxed and 24-times stiffer than the old one.
The F-450 is the biggest of them all, and can now tow 9,450 kg on the bumper or 12,500 kg with a fifth wheel hitch. Both are significantly higher than the competition. F-250 and F-350 can each handle 8,181 kg which is a good bump over the old truck, and again class leading. To help control all that trailer, the Super Duty will get available adaptive cruise control, which can use conventional and engine braking to keep the trailer slowed down. To help maneuver it and to help get hooked up, there are surround view cameras and a camera in the third brake light that lets you see into the bed. There is even an available remote camera that you can attach to the back of the trailer. For cargo that stays in the bed, payload is increased to a maximum of 3,468 kg.
Part of that increased payload and towing is the new frame and lighter body. The other part is more power. In the race to see which pickup gets 1,000 lb-ft first, a revised 6.7L Powerstroke diesel now makes an absurd 925 lb-ft of torque to go with the 440 hp. The 6.2L gas V8 has also gotten a bump to 430 lb-ft and remains at 385 hp. Behind both engines is a six-speed automatic with tow/haul mode and grade control shifting.
Full trim information and pricing haven't yet been announced, but should be available shortly before the trucks arrive at dealers this fall.
