Faulty Windshield Wipers Prompt Subaru Recall

More than 38,000 Subaru Legacy and Outback models have been recalled to fix wiper motors that could catch fire.

Transport Canada says that if something, like snow and ice, obstructs the wipers in returning to the base of the windshield, the wipers would continue to try to return to that "park" position. The resulting overload of electric current in the wiper motor could cause it to overheat. At best, that would render the wipers inoperable; at worst, the overheated motor could cause a fire.

In the affected Legacy and Outback models sold between 2010 and 2013, Subaru dealers will install a new bottom cover for the wiper motor that is more resistant to fire.
