No less than four models shared the spotlight on the Mercedes-Benz stage in Detroit. Dr Dieter Zetsche, or Dr Z, took the stage under the audience's applause and in his usual charismatic way, introduced this year's new comers to the silver-star family.
First on the stage was one of the brand's latest concepts, the EQ, an all-electric SUV unveiled at the Paris Motor Show in 2016. Dr. Z explained that massive investments were being made in electric vehicles and that a partnership with other automotive giants, namely Ford, BMW and Volkswagen, is aimed at developing what he calls the electric vehicle ecosystem, including all the necessary infrastructures.
Followed the new and refreshed Mercedes-AMG GLA 45, pushing 381 hp thanks to a 2.0L, four-cylinder turbocharged engine and sporting a black with yellow accents color scheme. To highlight their sport-lab's 50th anniversary, a Mercedes-AMG GT C, the non-convertible iteration of the already available AMG GT C Roadster. Alongside came the GT S, both GTs now featuring an upgraded look.
The real star of the show however, was the all-new Mercedes-Benz E-Class Coupé, the two-door version of the E family, joining the E-Wagon, E-Class Sedan and the Cabriolet, completing a well garnished lineup. The design has been slightly altered from the other variants to give it a sportier stance. The wheelbase is longer and the platform, wider by 67 mm. Dr Z that drove the new E-Class on the stage also made it a point to specify that the rear seats will comfortably accommodate passengers, unlike many coupes that sacrifice space for looks.
The Canadian specs have yet to be unveiled, the global market will receive three powertrains through four trim levels; a 2.0L, four-cylinder turbodiesel engine, rated at 194 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, a 2.0L, four-cylinder turbocharged engine available in a two variants, producing 184 hp and a more spirited tune with 245 hp, as well as a 3.0L V6 producing 333 hp. All engines will be teamed with a 9G-Tronic automatic transmission. The Dynamic Select system will allow the driver to choose the car's on-road behaviour from the twist of a knob
The new E-Class Coupé is expected to go on sale in Canada sometime in the summer.
