Mini says that they will have a fully electric model available by 2019. That will give the brand models with nearly every common fuel type, with a gas model, diesel in Europe, plug-in hybrid, and fully electric. The new car is part of parent company BMW's plan to electrify for the future.
The electric Mini will be based on the brand's three-door model. The current 2018 Mini Cooper S E Countryman plug-in hybrid is based on Mini's largest model. Mini said that the electric drivetrain would be built at BMW's e-mobility centre at Dingolfing and Landshut in Germany, but that the car would still be assembled at Mini's home in Oxford, UK. It will have a flexible platform that will allow electrification of further models if Mini later decides to expand the range.
The electric drive system will be built alongside BMW's other electric systems like the ones for the 5 Series and 7 Series hybrids at the two e-mobility plants. Oliver Zipse, production board member of BMW said that "our adaptable production system is innovative and able to react rapidly to changing customer demand. If required, we can increase production of electric drivetrain motor components quickly and efficiently."
BMW further committed to an i8 roadster for 2018, an electric X3 for 2020, and the concept iNext to arrive in 2020.
