Ram has beefed up their 3500 series truck for 2018. It now has the highest torque rating of any pickup and the highest fifth-wheel towing capacity to go with.
930 lb-ft of torque. More torque than even tractor trailers had just a few years ago. That's what the Cummins 6.7L diesel in the Ram 3500 can put out. That's 5 lb-ft more than Ford in the 2017 F-350 and 20 more than the 2017 Chevy Silverado 3500HD and GMC Sierra 3500HD. Head of Ram Mike Manley calls it "the highest-ever torque rating for a pickup truck."
Cummins boosted the torque by 30 lb-ft over last year by adding more boost through the variable geometry turbocharger. The fuel system is able to flow more diesel to put more bang in the extra air.
The beefed-up towing capacity comes from an in-house hitch from Ram. The new fifth-wheel hitch can now handle trailers up to 13,608 kg (a nice, round 30,000 lbs). It's a big jump from the 10,886 kg rating from last year. Ford's F-350 can tow 12,500 kg on a fifth-wheel and the GM twins are rated to tow 10,591 kg. Conventional towing - the hitch mounted below the bumper - is up too, from 8,182 kg to 9,072 kg for 2018.
The 2018 Ram Heavy Duty pickups should arrive at dealers in August.
