Production at Fiat Chrysler Automobiles' (FCA) Windsor, Ontario minivan plant resumed today after flooding caused by heavy rains forced the facility to shut down overnight.
According to Automotive News, the rain began falling Monday evening and the automaker sent about 2,000 shift workers home Tuesday at 5:30 pm after water began streaming into the plant.
FCA and Unifor, the union that represents the factory's roughly 6,000 employees, said production resumed early this morning, during the midnight shift. The 89-year-old factory, located near the city's downtown, is where the company builds the 2017 Dodge Grand Caravan and 2017 Chrysler Pacifica minivans, cranking out about 1,400 vehicles every day.
The Windsor Star reported that Windsor and the surrounding Essex County area was hit by an intense weather system that Environment Canada estimated had dumped between 80 and 150 mm of rain on the region in a four-hour period on Tuesday afternoon. The deluge flooded basements, roadways and parking lots across the city and shut down businesses and affected the city's hospitals. Nearby LaSalle, Ontario received 285 mm of rainfall in a 20-hour period.
