Hyundai says it will continue selling its five-door Accent hatchback here when a redesigned 2018 model debuts next year, but it will not be sold in the United States.
According to Automotive News Canada, Hyundai USA is dropping the Accent hatch in favour of a new crossover to be called the Kona, but will keep the Accent sedan in its lineup. The 2018 Accent sedan made its global debut earlier this year at the Toronto auto show.
While the sedan will arrive across North America this fall, Hyundai Canada's Chad Heard reportedly said hatchback fans will have to wait until the first half of 2018 to get the new five-door, citing the longer process involved in developing a car for Canada's smaller market.
The Accent's new design promises to take Hyundai's entry-level model a tick upscale, with more interior space and styling that apes its larger siblings, the Elantra and Sonata. The enlarged interior comes courtesy of a wider, longer body (especially the hatch, whose body will be 50 mm longer) and stretched wheelbase.
A 1.6L engine will make a bit less power, at 132 hp and 119 lb-ft of torque, but Hyundai promises a seven percent improvement in fuel economy. It will come hitched once again to six-speed manual and automatic transmissions.
