Dashcam: Another Day Spoiled on the 401

It's not something you ever want to experience. The realization that something flew off of the vehicle in front of you, there's nothing you can do, and you're going to hit it.

That's exactly what happens in this clip, filmed last month but posted to YouTube this week. The driver with the dashcam is headed east on Highway 401 in Pickering, ON.

The video was posted by the driver's son. He told us that "my mum (the driver) was okay, she was just shook up. She had glass bits on her clothes, but no injuries." In the video, you can see as she pulls in behind a white Dodge Grand Caravan. She is even following at a proper distance. That's not normally an easy task on the 401.

Suddenly, the trim panel on the roof of the Caravan comes flying off. Third brake light and all. The spoiler floats through the air before smashing into the windshield of the camera car, a Toyota Corolla.

Fortunately, the driver remained calm and was able to stop safely. As a nice surprise, the driver who lost a piece of their roof actually noticed. And she stopped to exchange insurance information.

That's a kudos to laminated windshield glass, and a poor performance by the double sided tape and M6 nut that are supposed to keep the Caravan's spoiler attached.
