A new group of apps from GM let you order coffee, find gas or parking, and even buy wings from your car. Because those are all things you should be doing while you're driving.
GM's new Marketplace is a group of apps that use the 4G LTE connectivity in select Chevrolet, Buick, GMC, and Cadillac vehicles. It's designed to let people handle everyday tasks safely while they drive. The goal is to save time and effort. And make it safer and easier to do things you're probably already doing via your smartphone.
The GM shop lets you buy more data for your car or extend your OnStar subscription, but it's also used to send the driver offers for parts and service for their car.
The Starbucks app lets drivers order their coffee and food on the go, letting you skip the line by having it ready for pickup when you arrive. There is a similar app for Dunkin' Donuts.
Shell and ExxonMobil apps will find gas stations, as well as give pricing and station amenities. Pay from your car isn't available now, but it's expected. Jaguar lets you buy fuel direct from your car in other parts of the world already.
Other food apps include Wingstop, TGI Fridays, Applebees, and IHOP. The TGI Fridays app lets you make reservations, the other ones do online ordering. There is also a delivery.com app that lets you order from more local restaurants and stores for pickup or delivery.
Parkopedia and Priceline let you find parking and book a hotel while you're on your road trip.
GM is planning to add more features over the next 12 to 18 months. The Marketplace will be added to millions of 2017 and 2018 GM vehicles as well as new models.
But you can't order your Tims on the go just yet. The Marketplace is US only, for now. GM Canada told us that they are evaluating expansion to other markets based on how popular it is in the US.
