Volkswagen has just unveiled an all-new Jetta at the North American International Auto Show. The new Jetta gets a new platform, new engines, and new premium features.
The new Jetta is based on the same Volkswagen MQB platform as the Golf and Tiguan. Despite that, the already big Jetta gets bigger. It's up 33 mm between the wheels, with a wheelbase of 2,685 mm. It's also longer overall, wider and taller, although VW didn't give the remaining dimensions.
The new engine is a 1.4L turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 147 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. There is a six-speed manual transmission standard, with an eight-speed automatic available. Automatic models get standard start-stop technology to save fuel at a stop.
The interior is all-new and is directed toward the driver. The infotainment screen is high in the dash and is sharply angled at the driver. The cabin now has soft-touch materials throughout, with new design elements to give it a more upscale and modern appearance. Heated and ventilated seats will be available. Other options include colour-selectable ambient lighting, a 400-watt Beats audio system, and VW's Car-Net connectivity system. That system gives Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, as well as app-connected vehicle services.
Volkswagen's fully digital gauge panel will be available, and it can be customized to show what the driver wants to see. The Jetta will also have new driver assistance features that include forward collision warnings, emergency braking, radar cruise control, and automatic high beams. It also offers post-collision braking which helps stop the car if the driver is disabled in a collision.
The 2019 Jetta is expected to arrive mid-year, with pricing to follow closer to the on-sale date.
