Honda will reportedly add a new mid-size, five-seat crossover called the Passport to its lineup in early 2019 to fill the gap between the CR-V and Pilot.
Automotive News reports the Passport will be shown this fall at the Los Angeles auto show before being revealed at a Honda dealer meeting and reaching showrooms early next year.
The news confirms a rumour of a five-seat Pilot variant that came to light in early 2017.
Passport is a new name for Honda in the Canadian market, but it was used on the brand's first U.S.-market SUV in the 1990s, which was a rebadged version of the Isuzu Rodeo.
Canadians may be familiar with the Passport name thanks to GM's use of it to sell Isuzu and Saab models in the late 1980s, along with the Passport Optima, a Korean-built Opel compact known elsewhere as the Kadett and the Pontiac LeMans.
Technical details of the new Honda model are few, but it is expected to share the 2018 Honda Pilot's underpinnings. Honda's decision to add a mid-size five-seater stems from dealer demand for a vehicle to compete directly with vehicles like the 2018 Ford Edge and 2018 Nissan Murano in North America's crossover-hungry marketplace.
