Ford has already revealed just how much torque the F-150's new 3.0L diesel will make. Now they're telling us just how little fuel it will use to do it.
The new 3.0L V6 Power Stroke diesel is on the way this spring with 250 hp and 440 lb-ft of torque. That edges out the only other diesel in the segment. The 2018 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel makes 240 hp and 420 lb-ft - the EcoDiesel also doesn't appear in the 2019 Ram line-up.
The F-150 gets two more gears in the automatic transmission, bringing the total to 10. With many gears comes better fuel economy. Ford says the diesel F-150 will get an EPA estimated 10.8 L/100 km city, 8.0 highway, and 9.5 L/100 km combined. That handily beats the Ram's 11.8/8.6/10.4. The F-150 has a higher payload and towing capacity as well, with 918 kg max payload and 5,182 kg towing. The most fuel-sipping gas F-150 is the 2.7L EcoBoost that offers 11.9 L/100 km city, 9.0 highway, and 10.6 combined.
In addition to the 10-speed automatic, the Power Stroke diesel has a few more fuel-saving tricks under the hood. Like radiator shutters that close for improved aerodynamic efficiency and a viscous controlled fan that moves more air when needed, but can reduce the load when cruising.
The 3.0L Power Stroke diesel will be available on two and four-wheel drive trucks, in SuperCrew and SuperCab body styles, starting this spring.
