Canadian 3.0L TDI Emissions Settlement Approved

The $229 million settlement for owners of 3.0L TDI Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche models has been approved by an Ontario Superior Court Judge, Automotive News reports.

The settlement between Volkswagen and counsel involved with the Canadian class action, in consultation with the Commissioner of Competition, was reached in January, but still required judicial approval. It saw $229 million divided up between the approximately 20,000 owners of affected vehicles.

Around 5,000 owners and lessees of 2009-2012 vehicles affected will be eligible for a cash payment. They will also be given offers for a buyback, trade-in, or a modification to reduce emissions, should one be approved. The approximately 15,000 2013-2016 model year owners and lessees will get a recall for an emissions repair, an extended emissions warranty, and will also be eligible for cash payments. The payment amounts range from around $1,500 to nearly $10,000 depending on the age and make, as well as if it was owned or leased.

Justice Paul Perell said that the agreement "is not a perfect settlement," but said that more litigation would at best give a marginally better one.

Owners of 2.0L TDI models reached a settlement in 2016.
