BMW Teases Next-Generation Z4 Roadster

BMW has confirmed an estimated arrival date for the next-generation of its Z4 roadster in the first half of 2019.

Head of BMW Canada communications, Marc Belcourt, backed up the broad predictions being floated in reports following an exclusive European media event involving prototypes of the car the German company is co-developing with Toyota.

BMW published photos of the camouflaged car being flogged at the Miramas Autodrome in the south of France, part of the company's process of dialing in the final suspension and chassis setup for the production model.

The accompanying press release is short on information we didn't already know about the car, but BMW does confirm the car will be available with a "new, extremely powerful" inline six-cylinder engine, probably a variant of the 322 hp unit used in the latest 5 Series.

BMW has shown the new Z4 in concept form at the 2017 Frankfurt auto show, which we think gives a good idea of what the finished product will look like.

The next-generation Z4 is the car on which BMW collaborated with Toyota, the fruits of whose labour will ripen into a reborn Supra sports coupe. The Japanese company revealed a racing concept version of that car earlier this year at the Geneva auto show. Earlier reports pointed to both cars sharing powertrains, which means the the Supra will likely be available with that BMW engine, whatever form it takes in this car.
