After the reveal of the hatchback earlier this year, Mercedes-Benz has now revealed the sedan version of the A-Class. The brand's smallest sedan will be joining the hatchback in Canada, loaded with big car tech.
The A-Class debuts an entirely new infotainment system for Mercedes-Benz. The automaker says that the new MBUX system can be not just customized to the user, but learn the driver's habits through artificial intelligence. It includes voice control using a "Hey Mercedes" command and uses a touchscreen, touchpad on the console, and S-Class-style touch buttons on the steering wheel. So you can adjust the climate control, for example, using the interface. Or you can just say "Hey Mercedes, I am cold" and it will turn up the heating.
Mercedes has added connectivity functions that include vehicle-to-vehicle communications that allow the car to receive messages about emergency braking or accidents from other cars. Two digital cockpit options are available, one with a pair of 7.0-inch screens and one with two larger 10.25-inch units.
The sedan continues the clean lines of the hatchback, with the addition of the sloping rear glass and short decklid. It's the first time that Mercedes has offered the A-Class as a sedan. The company says that the clean lines of the car have the lowest aerodynamic drag of any production vehicle, thanks to a coefficient of drag of just 0.22 and a small frontal area. Despite the small frontal area, the company says that the car has above average shoulder, elbow, and headroom.
We'll get just one engine in the A-Class, a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder that makes 188 hp and 221 lb-ft of torque. That engine is paired with a seven-speed automatic. The standard A 220 is offered in front wheel drive, but an all-wheel drive A 220 4Matic is also available. That's a little down on power compared with the 221 hp A 250 hatchback, so buyers wanting the quickest A will need to either stick with the hatch or wait for an expected AMG version.
The A 220 will have expanded brake assist standard. That helps mitigate collisions with slow or stopped vehicles as well as crossing pedestrians or cyclists. LED headlamps with multibeam controlled adjustment taken from the A's bigger brothers are available.
The new A-Class sedan will be shown for the first time at the Paris Motor Show in October, although the China-only long-wheelbase model was revealed last April. Sales are expected to start at the end of the year.
