The latest generation of GMC's Sierra 1500 pickup has only been on sale for a few months, but GMC is already giving it an update. The new for 2019 truck will be getting a host of new features for model year 2020, arriving later this year.
It starts with the CarbonPro carbon fibre pickup box. The corrosion-proof and 27 kg lighter composite box that was announced before the 2019 truck launched will finally arrive on the 2020 pickup. But that's not the only change.
GMC is adding some new towing tech from the 2020 Sierra HD. The ProGrade Trailering system with 15 camera views will let drivers see just about everywhere. There's even a composite view that lets you see through your trailer using a trailer-mounted remote camera.
A new InCommand control system that works through the myGMC app can allow drivers to turn on trailer AC or water heater and check trailer information like water and generator fuel levels, if they have a trailer that supports the system.
The 2020 Sierra gets adaptive cruise control as an option on SLT, AT4, and Denali trims, a feature notably missing from 2019. The full-speed system comes with a camera mounted behind the rear view mirror to detect other vehicles.
GM's already announced 3.0L Duramax inline-six diesel will arrive for 2020, with 277 hp and 460 lb-ft of torque. That engine will be available on SLE and above trims and comes with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
That 10-speed auto will also be available on more trucks for 2020. In 2019, it was only available with the 6.2L V8, making it an option even on Denali. For 2020, it will be available with the Dynamic Fuel Management-equipped 5.3L V8 on all four-wheel drive trucks SLE grade and up. The 5.3/10-speed combo will be standard on the 2020 Denali.
GMC didn't say when the new model would arrive, but expect it later this year with pricing to follow.
