BMW has given its X1 crossover a refresh for 2020. That means new styling, new gearbox programming, and some new colour and wheel choices.
It starts with larger kidney grilles in the nose. They allow more airflow, for cooling, but they also make it look more like BMW's other newest crossovers, the X5 and X7. LED headlights with a hexagonal accent light further tie the family resemblance with its bigger siblings. The fog lights have also been moved from the oddly-placed bumper holes of 2019 to a less conspicuous place in the lower bumper corner openings.
Walk around the back and there are new tinted taillights plus L-shaped accents. The rear reflectors are also expanded. If you're thinking the exhaust tips look bigger, then you're right. The twin-tips have grown by 20mm, now 90 mm in diameter.

Open the doors, and the X1 greets you with a two-tone LED X1-logo projection. The 8.8-inch standard infotainment screen uses iDrive version 6 with Apple CarPlay compatibility. Also on the inside, there's a new electronic gear selector, plus contrast stitching for dash and floor mats. The optional Dakota leather interior adds colour matching for the lower dash and door handles.
The engine in the X1 xDrive 28i is the same 2.0 L four as last year. The turbocharged engine puts out 225 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The eight-speed automatic, BMW's only gearbox option for the crossover in Canada, has received new gear ratios that the automaker says improve performance and offers "almost imperceptible shifts."
Three new colour choices for the outside are Storm Bay, Jucaro Beige and Misano Blue, which replaces Estoril Blue.
The 2020 X1 is set to go on sale in Canada later this year, with pricing closer to the on-sale date.
