Auto industry research firm J.D. Power has bestowed a Platinum level rating to Toyota’s Cambridge, Ontario manufacturing facility. J.D. Power announced the award as part of its 2019 vehicle Initial Quality Study based on the number of defects, malfunctions or issues reported by customers.
For that study, J.D. Power polled owners of vehicles purchased or leased between November 2019 and February 2019 to find the makes and models with the fewest defects during the first 90 days of ownership.
Toyota’s Cambridge North factory got J.D. Power’s platinum award -- making it the best-ranked plant in the world -- for the Corolla compact, and the Cambridge South plant won the bronze prize for its work building the Lexus RX.
This marks the third time Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada (TMMC) has won the platinum prize, and the fourth time it was one two prizes in the same year. TMMC has won a total of 18 J.D. Power awards for manufacturing quality.
Other award-winning plants include Toyota’s Tsutsumi 1 factory in Japan, which won gold in the Asia Pacific region for building the Prius. BMW’s Regensburg, Germany facility also won gold in the Europe/Africa regions; that plant turns out the 4 Series, X1 and X2 models.
