Chevrolet is going big on the all-new Trax. The model that was Chevrolet's smallest crossover will now be the second smallest, growing larger than the Trailblazer and much larger than the model it replaces. Still, the 2024 Chevrolet Trax will remain the lowest-priced crossover from the brand, staying true to its previous mission.
It starts with a wheelbase 152 mm longer than the Trax it replaces and an overall length that grows by 279 mm to 4,536 mm. That's 129 mm longer than the Trailblazer. Width is up too, and while Chevrolet didn't give us all of the dimensions, it did say that cargo capacity is up by 12 per cent, which should put it right at 600 L with the seats up. Rear legroom climbs 76 mm to the benefit of rear seat passengers.
Despite being bigger, Chevrolet wants it to be around $5,000 cheaper than the Trailblazer, at least in the U.S. Canadian pricing hasn't been announced yet. Part of that cost cut will come by making the Trax only available with front-wheel drive. Chevrolet said 70 per cent of buyers were taking it that way anyway, so dropping the option for AWD helps cut costs.
Chevrolet said it was looking to make the Trax more stylish than before, and it has definitely accomplished that. Looking lower, sleeker, and generally sharper than the model it replaces, this is a good-looking low-priced vehicle, not a cheap-looking one.
The powertrain will be a 1.2L turbocharged three-cylinder. Power is estimated at 137 hp with 162 lb-ft of torque, and the engine will be paired with a six-speed automatic transmission. This is the same engine used in base Trailblazer models, but it has been enhanced with an improved start-stop system, variable valve timing, and a new crankshaft, all in the name of fuel economy. Chevy says it should also be about a second quicker to 100 km/h.
Four trim levels will be offered: LS, LT, RS, and Activ. Most trims, Chevrolet says, will get wireless phone charging and push-button start. Standard across the line will be Chevrolet's advanced driver assistance system with automatic emergency braking, front pedestrian braking, lane keep assist, and automatic high beams. Optional safety kit will include adaptive cruise control, blind spot alerts, and rear parking sensors.
Interestingly, active noise cancellation will be standard, helping to keep the cabin quiet. Wireless Android Auto and Apple CarPlay will also come standard with an 8.0-inch screen on the LS and base RS with an 11-inch screen on the rest. Base trims get 17-inch wheels with other trims getting 18 and 19-inch choices.
The 2024 Chevrolet Trax should go on sale in the spring of 2023. Pricing starts from $21,699 before destination, slightly less than the model it replaces. While Chevrolet didn't announce pricing for the higher trims, based on US prices we expect an Activ to come in around $25,000.
