Chevrolet Volt wins Canadian Green Car Award

The Canadian Green Car Award has named the Chevrolet Volt its overall winner for 2016.

Today's announcement was made at Toronto's Green Living Show, where the Volt was named the victor over five other category winners.

In that initial round of awards, the Volt was named best plug-in hybrid; other winners, and contenders for the overall win, included the Nissan Leaf (battery electric/zero emission vehicle); Hyundai Sonata Hybrid (conventional hybrid); Mazda 3 GS (efficient internal combustion); Volvo XC90 T6 (efficient three-row family vehicle); and the Tesla Model S P90D ('fun' car).

Judges for the Canadian Green Car Award were asked to submit their top five picks for every category. The vehicles that garnered the most votes were named tops in their respective categories, and all six of those vehicles were eligible for the big prize.

Previous Canadian Green Car Award winners include the Kia Soul EV (2015); Honda Accord Hybrid (2014); and the Ford Fusion Hybrid was the award's inaugural winner, in 2013.

The Chevrolet Volt was also named 2016 Canadian Green Car of the Year by the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC).
