The all-new 2018 Chevrolet Equinox will get a diesel engine, Chevy has announced. Largely unchanged since 2009, the mid-size SUV still sells well but was due for a modernization. The new Equinox gets new styling that shares the front-end and scalloped side styling with the newest Cruze, Malibu, and Impala.
The look is more upscale than the old model and showcases standard LED accent lights and standard projector headlights. New taillights continue the newest Chevrolet design themes, in a Camaro-inspired way.
There are massive changes under the skin as well. The new model is 180 kg lighter than the old one, and there is a trio of new engine choices. The first is a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder that generates 170 hp. That will be connected to a six-speed automatic. Next is a 2.0L turbo four making 252 hp, 260 lb-ft, and pairing with a nine-speed automatic. Both engines are direct injected. The surprise engine choice is a segment exclusive: a diesel. That's right, there's a 1.6L turbo-diesel producing 136 hp, 236 lb-ft and returning a GM estimated 5.9 L/100 km highway with the six-speed auto.
On the inside, the dash strongly resembles the 2017 Chevrolet Cruze, and has some interesting new features like denim-style seat fabrics. The rear seat will also fold forward and down for a flatter rear cargo area with the seats down. The SUV will have new infotainment systems, either a 7.0- or 8.0-inch touchscreen with GM's MyLink and Apple Carplay and Android Auto support.
Available safety features will include GM's Teen Driver monitoring, a surround view camera, forward collision alert, lane guidance, GM's new rear seat reminder (to help ensure children aren't forgotten in the back seat), and rear cross-traffic alert. All Canadian models will receive heated seats, rear-view camera, and remote start as standard.
The 2018 Chevrolet Equinox is expected to go on sale in the first quarter of next year.
