New BMW 5 Series Images Leaked Before Official Reveal

Images of the all-new BMW 5 Series have been leaked to the Internet in the Chinese media a couple of days before the car's official reveal.

The low-quality photos come not long after BMW teased the new design in a series of detail photos and short videos made to highlight some of the car's update features.

The leaked photos show an evolution of the current 5 Series, but with design cues -- like new head- and taillights -- that emphasize the car's width.

An updated infotainment system will use pinch-to-zoom touchscreen tech (don't expect BMW to ditch iDrive, however), new driver assistance tech will give the car some semi-autonomous abilities and the ability to monitor a parked 5 Series from a smartphone, and to park and unpark it using said device. Naturally, there are the usual promises of improved driving dynamics, too.

Look for the new, larger 5 Series to be lighter than its predecessor, thanks to the use of aluminum in its body structure; the car's architecture will be shared with the 7 Series.

The new 5 Series gets its official reveal on October 13.

In other BMW news, the Reuters news agency reports the German automaker has confirmed it will sell all-electric versions of its X3 compact crossover and Mini Cooper subcompact hatchback. It looks like the Mini will be first to market, in about three years. The two models would join BMW's existing electric and plug-in hybrid (PHEV) models, the i3 and i8, and PHEV versions of the 3 Series and X5, called the 330e and X5 xDrive40e, respectively.
