Next Jeep Wrangler To Get Hybrid Power

Jeep has confirmed that the next-generation Wrangler is getting gas-electric hybrid power. The next Jeep Wrangler will get some sort of hybrid system to help boost fuel economy without losing its signature look and off-road capability.

In an interview with Auto Express, Jeep CEO Mike Manley was asked if the next Wrangler would get some sort of hybrid system. He confirmed "yes," adding "we have continued our studies on hybridization for the Wrangler, and it’s a balance for us." He doesn't confirm what type of system it will be though, saying "obviously there are loads of different hybrid technologies, from mild to 48v through to full battery-electric."

Asked if the Wrangler would go full EV, Manley said that full battery power is "not a great fit." Hybrid power makes more sense due to the longer range, increased torque, and improved control, Manley told the British magazine.

Manley added that the new Wrangler would see a weight reduction program, along with improved noise, vibration, and harshness. The latter three are for comfort, but the weight loss and hybrid system are big efforts to improve the fuel economy and emissions. Despite the weight loss attempts, he said that the Wrangler will still use high-strength steel for durability.

The new Jeep Wrangler is expected to debut sometime next year.
