The folks at a Jeep discussion forum have revealed information from the Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) dealer vehicle ordering system that says the next-generation Wrangler will be offered with a full-time automatic 4WD system, a diesel engine and a turbo four-cylinder with automatic stop/start.
An info-dump post at JLWranglerForums.com lays it out, listing among the highlights a Selec-Trac full-time 4WD system that distributes engine torque to the front axle when the rear wheels slip. If the information is credible, that 4WD system's inclusion would make the new Wrangler, set for a reveal at this year's LA auto show, the first to be widely offered with full-time four-wheel drive.
Hardcore Jeep enthusiasts can take solace in the fact the new-to-Wrangler drive system will be optional, and only offered in the four-door Sahara model, the most pavement-friendly version of this venerable off-roader. The insider info also suggests Jeep will no longer offer the Sahara trim in the Wrangler's two-door body style.
Other nifty tidbits include some things already widely suspected, like the option of FCA's 3.0L turbodiesel engine. While the post doesn't confirm a wilder rumour of a hybrid powertrain, it does list a four-cylinder turbocharged engine with a "belt starter generator," which is an automatic start/stop system that uses a special alternator that can also re-start the engine.
Not mentioned is the pickup body style Jeep confirmed last summer.
Watch for all of this to be confirmed -- or denied -- when Jeep pulls the wraps off the all-new Wrangler in LA this December.
