Our Find of the Week this week is a one of a kind RV. Based on a Mercedes-Benz Sprinter platform, this van has a unique look inside and out.
While RV conversion vans hit peak visibility with the 1970s windowed and muraled van movement, campers based on a van platform have stayed popular for years.
Massive 40-foot long diesel and gas Class A RVs are the ones you're most likely to notice on the highway or at campgrounds. Big and shiny, with up to four slide-out sections, they stand out. The only thing that stands out more than the vehicles themselves are the price tags and maintenance costs.
That's why there are the slightly smaller Class C RVs. You'll recognize their noses as being a regular Ford, Chevrolet, or Ram van, but they're almost as big as a Class A. Still, they're too big and too expensive for many people's needs.
Enter the Class B. Like this 2004 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter RV conversion. It starts with a regular Mercedes-Benz Sprinter Van. Big enough to sleep at least two - as long as they're friendly - small enough to be easy to drive and park downtown in just about any city in the world.
RV manufacturers build Class B van RVs, but it's mostly straightforward to build your own. That customises it for the look and amenities (and budget) you want.
Like our Find of the Week. It started with a 2004 Mercedes-Benz Sprinter 2500 platform. The tall roof and long wheelbase mean that there is lots of room inside for you to stand up and live in there. Under the hood is a 2.7L inline five-cylinder diesel that makes 154 hp and 243 lb-ft of torque. The diesel torque and five-speed automatic give plenty of grunt to move your house around.
Inside, this RV has everything, including a kitchen sink. There is a shower, a toilet, stove, coffee maker, and toaster oven all built in. That's along with LED lighting, a hot water heater and furnace, and lots of storage cabinets. The storage space makes the interior short on windows, but big on function. The owner calls it a "rustic cabin interior design."
Outside, though, this is definitely unique. This van has an entire catalogue's worth of accessories outside. Grab handles for the hood, 11 driving lights, a chain-suspended bumper bar, extra rear view mirrors, and a ladder to climb up to the rooftop storage and viewing rack. At the back are even more extra lights, extra fuel, generator storage, and a big-rig style exhaust pipe sticking above the roof.
The exterior style has an interesting mix of Zombie-protection style without straying into the full-on spikes and grated windows that make apocalypse-ready rigs look a little unhinged.
This ready-to-go RV is for sale in Abbotsford, BC. But unlike most of our Find of the Week vehicles, this one can't be yours. And don't be surprised if the link takes you to suggestions for other RVs. That's because it already sold. In under a week, this RV was gone.
