After weeks of teasing, FCA revealed its 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon today at the New York auto show, ending speculation about how powerful it would be and how quickly it would destroy a quarter-mile.
Now we know the Demon's 6.2L supercharged Hemi V8 makes 840 hp and 770 lb-ft of torque, making it the highest-horsepower V8 production car in history. That's enough to catapult the car through the quarter-mile in 9.65 seconds and from from 0-60 mph (96 km/h) in 2.3(!) seconds, while generating more g-forces during acceleration -- 1.8 times the force of gravity -- than any other production car during full-throttle acceleration.
What makes those stats more notable is that Dodge says the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) has banned the Demon from its sanctioned race events for being "too fast for the drag strip."
Other fun facts include a Guinness World Record for being the only production car to lift its front wheels off the ground during full-throttle launch; and the 45.2-square-inch hood induction scoop is the largest functional one of any production car.
Dodge lists several other Demon production car firsts, including:
-first and only production car designed to run on 100-plus octane fuel;
-first and only production car with a transmission brake for quicker launches;
-first and only production car with a front passenger seat delete.
