Dodge has announced how many wheel-standing Dodge Challenger SRT Demons they'll be sending to Canada, how they'll be handed out, and how they're handling dealers who mark up the high-demand monster coupe. If you want one, the order books open tomorrow.
Some low-volume high-demand cars like the Demon can end up with huge markups from dealers. And Dodge knows that there's a good chance it'll happen on this 840 hp Challenger. SRT Head Tim Kuniskis said "we know some dealers may be tempted to sell to the highest bidder, but we are encouraging them to leverage the Demon as a halo for both the brand and their dealership, to bring customers into their showrooms and see everything we have to offer." So here's Dodge's plan.
There are 300 cars coming to Canada, and about 440 dealers. That means not every dealer will get a car, and some could get more than one. To be eligible to order a Demon, dealers must have sold more than one Hellcat in the last 12 months. After that, the allocation will be based 60 percent on Hellcat sales and 40 percent on "regular" Charger and Challenger sales. Obviously, dealers won't be permitted to order more than they are allocated, but here's the interesting part.
"Demons sold at or below MSRP will receive priority scheduling resulting in lower serial numbers" and "Demons sold for a price that exceeds MSRP will be produced after priority production is completed." So if your dealer wants to get their car early, they'll sell it to you for sticker price. If they think you don't mind waiting until the end, then the price might be a little higher. They're enforcing it by requiring the customer to sign and acknowledge a document, plus have it notarized before the order is placed in the production queue.
It's not the usual way to order a new Dodge, but this isn't a usual Dodge. Deliveries are scheduled to begin this fall, but if you don't want to wait, there should be a few 707 hp Hellcat models floating around. The Canadian MSRP still hasn't been set, but it stickers at $84,995 in the US.
